HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO DISAPPEAR?

Closure is a film about a father’s search for his missing son, and the question it leaves behind: how can we help when someone wants to disappear?

When sixteen-year-old Chris goes missing, Daniel begins an all-consuming search along the river, desperately hoping to find him. What begins as one father’s journey starts to connect with many, as he offers answers and solace to other families with missing loved ones.

THE FILM

Some disappearances begin long before anyone notices.

Daniel didn't hear his 16-year-old son, Chris, slip out of the house that early morning. He didn't know what pulled him onto a bridge over the Vistula River in Warsaw — only that it was the last place he was seen. A CCTV camera captured him there, and then, between turns, he vanished.

Desperate to find answers, Daniel builds a custom search boat, outfits it with cameras and drones, and begins a search that consumes everything. Day after day on the water, he develops new tools, connects with other families living in the same limbo, and traces his son’s digital footprint, revealing how systems of connection are also leading a generation into greater isolation.

When you want to disappear, what helps you stay?

What helped me stay...

My best friend texting me every morning. She never made it a big deal, just said good morning

What helped me stay...

My nephew was born, and I wanted to be there for him

What helped me stay...

I made a bucket list, and realised there were so many things I still wanted to do

What helped me stay...

Running. I didn't even like it at first, but it was the only hour of the day that was just mine

THE IMPACT

We’re Making Change

Many people are feeling overwhelmed by the world, and struggling to cope. For some, there is an increasing sense that disappearing might be the only way out. We aim to address that with “The Moment Before” social campaign, to help people find connection and support before crisis point.

We are partnering with Global Initiative for Loneliness and Connection and other experts to develop and champion tools and solutions that help people spot and respond to early signs of the “disappear impulse” in themselves and others.

Disconnection is a public health issue - one that, if left unaddressed, can escalate into mental health crisis, across all ages, but especially for young people. At a time when we are more digitally connected than ever, many are also becoming more socially disconnected.

We want to help build spaces of care, connection, and welcome. This site is the first step to that. With expert resources, and community insights, we hope it will contribute to helping people when they want to disappear, with how to stay.

Many other things are happening as well. If you'd like to learn more about Daniel and the family's work, read more here.
